From 1st April employees classed as clinically extremely vulnerable will no longer need to shield under revised government guidance. This change in status comes as the vaccination programme gathers pace and rates of Covid-19 infections continue to reduce. More than 90% of individuals in the clinically extremely vulnerable category have now received their first dose of the vaccine.

Under this relaxation of the rules, those that are unable to do their job from home will be able to return to the workplace.

As an employer you have a responsibility to ensure precautions are taken to reduce the risk of exposure to covid-19 in the workplace:

  • Before any workers return to work it is essential to undertake a covid-safe risk assessment.
  • Put in place appropriate measures to minimise risks and keep all workers safe.
  • Take steps to inform staff of the measures in place for their safety.
  • Make sure you have effective processes in place to monitor compliance.
  • Always make sure you deal promptly with any concerns as they arise.

Take particular care with vulnerable workers – examine their circumstances on a case by case basis to identify all opportunities to eliminate or minimise any risk to their health and wellbeing.
