Earlier this month official government guidance was updated to clarify who is eligible to claim under the furlough scheme.

Under the guidance an employee can be covered by the furlough scheme if they are unable to work some or all of their normal hours because they must care for a child/children due to school closures.

Working parents who would ordinarily rely on elderly parents or informal childcare arrangements may be unable to access their usual support network during this latest lockdown.

Where employees are struggling to balance work and home schooling it may be appropriate to agree a period of furlough or flexible furlough in the place of unpaid leave, annual leave or a reduction in working hours.
