Don’t focus on the negatives!

Sport can be a powerful thing. With Wimbledon starting today (1st July 2019) how can your company harness the positives that supporting a major sport can bring?

Often we worry about the negative impacts of a major sporting tournament; who will call in sick, who will be late and will those that turn up be focussed on their work. Failing to plan ahead for major tournaments can result in problems but on the flip side there are many positives that could benefit your business.

Team sports that instil a feeling of togetherness and pride can be of huge value to your workplace. When our national teams or sporting heroes are doing well, the energy and excitement is palpable – why not feed off of the positivity and find ways to transfer that excitement, motivation and enthusiasm into your workplace.

Focus on the positives!

  • Don’t treat it as an inconvenience, embrace it!
    • Get excited and elevate the mood.
  • Encourage fair play.
    • Treat multiple requests for annual leave fairly.
  • Screen important games.
    • When important games fall in normal working hours can you arrange for the game to be shown in a convenient area? Think about flexing your working hours to allow viewing breaks without losing too much time.
  • Build the excitement at work on match days by continuing the theme into break times.
    • Why not supply squash and fresh fruit or even hold a strawberries and cream tea break in the afternoon?
  • Create sports themed team challenges to encourage positive rivalry and competition.
  • Put together your very own sports team?
    • Fantastic for team building and encouraging fitness and well-being at work, this is a great way to increase engagement and productivity. Everyone can get involved – those that are less sporty can get involved behind the scenes to help organise things or simply turn up to give their support and encouragement.
  • Sponsor a local team.
    • If putting together a sports team is not for you, you can raise your company profile and support the local community by sponsoring a local sports team. This needn’t be a big expense but could make a big difference to a small team.

“Sports teaches you character, it teaches you to play by the rules, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose – it teaches you about life.” – Billie Jean King
